The Illusionist

(USA, 2005, 109 minutes)

In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a mysterious magician finds his long-lost childhood sweetheart is now the crown prince’s fiancee. Sweeping, enveloping period mystery melodrama carried by its elegant handling and superb performances; a shame, then, that its enigmas are so hurriedly resolved at the end. Technical credits impeccable.
