300

(USA, 2007, 116 minutes)

A retelling of the mythical Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartan warriors held back the mighty army of the Persian god-king Xerxes. Old-fashioned sword-and-sandal heroics, adapted from an acclaimed graphic novel and given a glossy makeover of contemporary technology (only the actors and costumes are real, having been digitally inserted into painterly settings); a wonder to look at, but despite the myriad political readings one may apply, the narrative shortcomings hinder the imagery.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Legendary Pictures and Virtual Studios, a Mark Canton—Gianni Nunnari/Hollywood Gang/Atmosphere Pictures production.
