Dry Season

(France/Belgium/Tchad/Austria, 2006, 96 minutes)

Outraged at a general amnesty that has cleared his father’s killer, a rural Tchadian teenager heads to the capital N’djamena to find the man, now a married baker, and exact his revenge — but is instead taken in as if he were a long lost son. A run-of-the-mill melodrama of revenge is elevated above exotic curiosity level by a stylized yet simple and extraordinarily powerful handling that avoids as much dialogue as possible.
